Synopsis

When Felicia Day was a girl, all she wanted was to connect with other kids (desperately). Growing up in the South, where she was "home-schooled for hippies reasons," she looked online to find her trib. The internet was in its infancy, and Felicia became an early adopter at every stage of its growth - finding joy and unlikely friendships online. Her relative isolation meant that she could pursue passions like gaming, calculus and 1930s detective novels without shame. Because she had no idea how "uncool" she really was. Yet if it hadn't been for her strange background, Felicia might never have had the naive confidence to forge her own path. She graduated as valedictorian with degrees in math and music but decided to pursue acting in Hollywood. After finding herself typecast on TV, she created her own web series before anyone know online video could be more than just cats chasing laser pointers. Ever candid, Felicia opens up about the rough patches along the way, recounting battles with writer's block, a full-blown gaming addiction, severy anxiety and depression - and how she reinvented herself when overachieving became overwhelming.

My thoughts

I've seen her acting in the Supernatural as Charlie but frankly, I am not a fan. But what makes me buy this book is this: How come a not-so-establish actress got to write a memoir? There must be something about her. And it is! She is awesome. Really awesome! I like her and I think she is a wonderful human being that is so unique.

The book is about a life story of Felicia Day since she was a kid. How weird her life is and how it shapes her life. You can't expect a usual successful story but it is inspiring. She starts with being such a successful student and graduate with flying colors even though she was home-schooling. But she chose a different path, the harder and difficult path, not what others expected her too. The difficult path of course created such a hard time for her, driving her to depression and anxiety. Despite the tension, I like the way she tells the story, quirky and funny.

People are harsh and society just don't care how broken you are if you won't be able to contribute back. The fact is hurtful but that is the challenge all of us have to face especially with online society. Felicia Day wrote how she faced the harshness of online society and how it traumatized her. However, they are many other people that loves her that make all the hates no longer matter.

At the end, she manages to get her life in order, doing what she really passionate about. That is what I respected her so much. She is brave and not easily giving up until she get what she wants. Isn't it life supposed to be. If you feel down and having such a bad time, you can read this book. It will inspire you to do things that you really like and put the brave mask while doing it even though it scares you to death.

Favourite Chapter
Web series: A DIY Journey - The best part of her life that I really enjoy is when she do a web series. It is like a behind a screen of that web series. And I had watch the web series, it is really funny.
